De RAIN-studie toont aan dat een switch van intraveneuze naar orale antibioticabehandeling bij pasgeborenen met een verdenking op een bacteriële infectie niet inferieur is aan volledig intraveneuze therapie. De absorptie van orale amoxicilline is goed en een behandelregime van tweemaal daags antibiotica leidt tot adequate blootstelling op neonatale leeftijd. Momenteel loopt in Nederland een implementatieproject waarbij, naast een switch van intraveneus naar oraal, ook aandacht is voor het minder vaak starten (gebruik van de ‘early onset’-sepsiscalculator) en het eerder stoppen van antibioticabehandeling (PCT-gestuurd algoritme), aangezien er een sterke overbehandeling is met antibiotica op neonatale leeftijd.
